Bezos prohibits criticism of capitalism at the Post
The censorship that dares to speak its name.
Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, in an email to his employees:
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages. We are going to be writing every day in defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets…viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others…I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe that these viewpoints are underserved in the market of ideas and news opinion…
This email is so saturated with irony it’s hard to know where to begin. The obvious one is Bezos positioning himself as a champion of personal liberties in the same breath as he announced a ban on criticism of capitalism. Even more absurd is this notion that free market viewpoints are “underserved” in the media. Exactly how many socialists has the Washington Post employed in the past hundred years? Elizabeth Bruenig and who else?
